Embracing Your Baby
It's a fairly common practice when using affirmations and imagery to invite vivid imagery of the desired outcome--in this case one's baby or child. When I initially wrote the week-by-week affirmations following my first miscarriage, I included statements each week inviting images of holding my baby in my arms. I found these images soothing and empowering. When I got my BFP the following month, I was elated...but two months later when I lost that pregnancy as well, I was naturally devastated. After the two losses, the idea of picturing my baby and expecting to meet my baby some day became very painful. In fact, as I prepared to TTC a final time, I was unable to read my own affirmations. While they had brought me comfort and courage previously, it was too scary and painful to entertain setting myself up for another such loss. As a result of my experience, I removed most of the baby imagery from the week-by-week affirmations, in case it may trigger negative emotions, and also to protect somewhat against the pain of losses and BFNs. I discovered for myself that a portion of the suffering that came from infertility or loss was related to the loss of an idea for my future....the plans I'd started to make, the baby I longed to hold. Ultimately, I found it more helpful to be less specific about my visions of my future. I felt less vulnerable this way and could hold a generally positive outlook more easily.
However, I do think that the more specific imagery can be helpful on many levels - it may be healing, inspiring, comforting, etc. So I would like to include these affirmations as a separate set. I encourage you to judge for yourself whether it truly feels helpful for you at this stage in your journey. Please follow your intuition and let your inner wisdom guide you.
